Control of shoulder movement by FES

Abstract

Preliminary kinesiological and electromyographical (EMG) analysis of the shoulder movement of normal individuals were firstly studied and then restoration of shoulder function by FES was attempted. On the basis of the EMG analysis of muscles relating to shoulder movement, standard stimulation patterns were created to obtain three shoulder movements. These patterns were applied to three patients of hemiplegia and three patients of quadriplegia due to spinal cord lesion. It was found that the objective shoulder movements were obtained and resulted in well coordinated manner by this method in five cases.
