Abstract

It is important to clarify the lubrication behavior of mold flux between initially solidified shell and a caster mold in order to operate at a high casting rate without breakouts. And it is also essential to control the initial solidification of steel at the meniscus to obtain good surface quality of slabs. A simulation model was made to calculate the inflow of the mold powder into the gap between the shell and mold during oscillation and to realize the deformation of the shell which corresponds to the depth of oscillation marks on the slab surface. Calculation results by the model were in good agreement with the surface quality of the continuously cast slabs.
