Complete treatment of swine waste by developing thermophilic oxic process

Abstract

In this study, treatment characteristics of swine waste (90% water content) by thermophilic oxic process (TOP) were evaluated in bench scale and pilot scale experiments. In bench scale experiments, it was impossible to treat swine waste. As for the reason, the calories of swine waste were too low for water evaporation to take place. However, it could be treated by the addition of food oil as an assistant calorie source. When the swine waste BOD load was 3 kg·m-3 · day-1, the aeration rate was 100L·m-3·min-1 and 120mL of food oil was added, 86% of carbon was converted to CO2 and 98% of the water was evaporated in one cycle. 90% of the total added swine waste (40kg) and virgin food oil (2kg) was removed as gases, 8% was accumulated in the reactor and 2% was drained in 60 days. The pilot scale reactor was designed based on the bench scale experiment results. TOP successfully reappeared in the pilot scale reactor, and swine waste was treated effectively.
