Abstract
For calcium in high-density xenon (≤5×1018 cm-3) a collision-induced dipole (CID) transition 4s2-4s3d arising from the successive application of the quadrupole-dipole interaction and the radiative perturbation has been observed by absorption technique. As for the 4s2-4s3d electric-quadrupole transition of calcium the absorption oscillator strength and the collisional half width per unit xenon density have been determined to be 7.8×10-7 and 2.1×10-10 cm3s-1, respectively. Theoretical calculation by the use of these values gives the absorption coefficient for the CID transition in reasonable agreement with the observation.
