This paper proposes a procedure for a design of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The proposed method can form an appropriate cellular structure based on the concept of group technology. The cellular structure consists of machine groups celled cells, each of which processes a part family. The part family is defined as a set of parts whose processing routes are similar. In the cell formation process, a correlation coefficient between parts and machines plays an important role for determining the cellular structure.
