N2 - The carbon K-edge absorption spectra of microcyrstalline C70 have been measured using 270-330 eV synchrotron radiation and compared with that of a previously reported microcrystalline C60. The differences in the cage structure between the C70 and C60 fullerenes are clearly reflected in their XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structures) features. The C70 cluster contains a significant fraction of sp2 hybridized carbon bonds as revealed by the presence of a prominent π* resonance in the XANES spectrum.
