Unsteady flow fields, from hover to windmill brake state, of a model helicopter rotor are studied by direct numerical simulations of the three-dimensional, compressible Euler equations. "Vortex ring state" is captured for the case of a descent velocity close to the average downward velocity in hover, and the existence of a vortex ring in this state is confirmed. The aerodynamic characteristics are in good qualitative agreements with experiments. "Autorotation" is also captured for a low collective pitch angle and a large descent velocity.
