Abstract
Point of Sale (POS) scanner has been developed for reading a grocery bar code symbol whose popularity is currently skyrocketing in Japan. New techniques developed for high-density scan pattern generation made the scanner able to read omnidirectionally a truncated symbol at high speed, leading to not only improvement of reading performance, but also reduction of running cost of label and improvement of package design. Additionally, the scanner is designed for compact built-in type provided with internal space for mounting optional equipment, bringing realization of a unified POS scanner for a modular type POS system.
