Abstract
The mechanism of boundary-layer transition and the behaviour of spiral vortices on spheres rotating in otherwise undistributed fluid were investigated experimentally. Critical and transition Reynolds numbers which determine the laminar-turbulent transition regime on the sphere surface were measured. In addition the number of spiral vortices on the sphere and the direction of the vortex axis were clarified.
