In accordance with the plane-wave Born approximation, contribution of atomic bremsstrahlung (AB) in heavy-ionatom collisions has been estimated and compared with experimental results. It is found that AB is negligibly small in symmetric or nearly symmetric collisions, whereas it becomes predominant in asymmetric collisions. Thus continuum x rays produced in asymmetric heavy-ionatom collisions, which have not fully been interpreted yet, can be understood by taking account of the atomic bremsstrahlung.
