Application of flow visualization technique to die casting mold filling investigation

Abstract

Various flow visualization methods have been applied to solve flow problems in the mechanical engineering. In this research, die casting flow analyses using water model flow visualization techniques were investigated. In die castings, flow in a die cavity is unsteady and includes free surfaces. In this report, three flow visualization methods using tracer particles were compared: (1) 4 points-time-consecutive particle tracing method (2) binarized image correlation method and (3) flow line method. Among these, the flow line method was found to be most effective, because it could deal with free surface flows and could be applied to flows with wide velocity ranges.
