Anomalous X-ray Scattering Study for Determining Cation Distribution in ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4.

Abstract

The distribution of Zn2+or Ni2+in ferrite spinels of ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4and its temperature dependence up to 1173K have been determined by applying the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method near the K absorption edges of Zn, Ni and Fe. Measured intensity ratio with two energies close to the Zn and Fe edges for the present ZnFe2O4sample can be quantitatively explained when all Zn2+are allocated to the tetrahedral position formed by four oxygens, suggesting that an almost perfectly normal state was maintained by the heat treatment up to 1173K. On the other hand, the results for NiFe2O4sample imply that Ni2+prefers the octahedral position formed by eight oxygens. The usefulness of this AXS method has been well-recognized by obtaining the cation distribution in such ferrite systems with near neighboring elements in the periodic table.
