Anomalous magnetic properties of Fe2GeS4 and Mn 2SiS4

Abstract

The magnetic properties of single crystalline Fe2GeS4 and Mn2SiS4 with the olivine structure were investigated. In Fe2GeS4, the first-order phase transition at 69 K was confirmed to involve a spin reorientation from the b- to the a-axis with decreasing temperature. As for Mn2SiS4, the emergence of weak feiromagnetism near the Néel temperature (TN) was attributed to the steep suppression of the spin-flop field around TN. The role of thermal fluctuations is stressed.
