An oxidative dimerization of anthrones by oxygen-metal acetate system

Abstract

Anthrones were oxidatively dimerized with oxygen in the presence of Pb(OAc)2 giving 9,9′-bianthracene-10,10′(9H,9′H)-diones. The dimerization proceeds under mild reaction conditions, and gives products in good yields. Binaphthacenedione and bipentacenedione were also synthesized.
