An ion channeling study of V2D crystals

The lattice location of D in V2D is determined at various temperatures from room temperature to 423 K with the channeling method using the nuclear reaction D(3He, p)4He. The results showed that the configuration of deuterium atoms in vanadium is changed with the temperature. In the α-V2D phase which exists above 406 K, deuterium atoms are located randomly in the tetrahedral interstices (T sites) of the b.c.c. metal lattice. On the contrary, the deuterium atoms occupy mainly the octahedral interstices of a special type (Oz sites) in the β-V2D phase below 406 K. The overall features of the observed angular yield curves can be understood by the occupation of the T site in α-V2D and of the Oz site in β-V2D. The density distribution of deuterium in the Oz-site examined using critical half-angle measurements in the axial and planar directions. It is revealed that its distribution is appreciably wider in the [100] direction than in the [001] direction. The change in D configuration observed will be compared with a theoretical description on the state of existence of D atoms in the b.c.c. metals by Fukai and Sugimoto.
