An analytical estimate of shear band initiation in a necked bar

Abstract

The initiation of localized deformation in the form of shear bands within the necked region of an axially loaded rectangular specimen is studied analytically for a plane strain deformation. A semi-inverse method is used to estimate the nonhomogeneous stress state in the necked region prior to shear band inception. For the localization analysis a generalized J2 plasticity theory which includes the dilatancy and pressure sensitivity effects is employed. The analytical estimates are compared with some existing experimental results, and good correlation is obtained.
