An algorithm for the design of manufacturing cells

Abstract

In the literature on cellular manufacturing, numerous mathematical models and various algorithms have been investigated for cell formation problem. However, most of the proposed models and algorithms have more or less drawbacks for designing manufacturing cells in both quality and speed. In the present paper, we propose a mathemati-cal model that stresses several real-life issues of cellular manufacturing systems design. Then, we develop a heuristic algorithm that can solve this NP-hard model efficiently.
