Age, growth, and spawning period of stone flounder Platichthys bicoloratus in Hiuchi-nada, central Seto Inland Sea, Japan

    Abstract

    To examine growth and spawning period for stone flounder Platichthys bicoloratus, we sampled a total of 160 fish, in Hiuchi-nada, Seto Inland Sea, during 2015-2017. Opaque zones formed annually from January to June. The maximum ages were 7-years for males and 6-years for females. The von Bertalanffy growth equations were estimated as: TLt = 359{1-exp [-0.75 (t-0.10)]} for males and TLt = 467{1-exp [-0.52 (t-0.08)]} for females, where TLt is the total length (mm) at t (year). The seasonal change in the gonadosomatic index suggested that the spawning period occurred during December-January. Our results are essential information for the fisheries management.
