In order to realize LCDs with an extremely wide viewing angle and high contrast ratio, an ideal polarizer and/or an ideal quarter-wave plate is indispensable. We established a design procedure to obtain any dispersion and viewing angle properties of the retardation by stacking two or three retardation films. Using this procedure, we successfully designed and fabricated an almost ideal polarizer and quarter-wave plate.
