Rhinacanthone [2], formerly regarded as a pyrano-1,4-naphthoquinone, has been shown to be an o-quinone on the basis of its uv-vis, ir, and COLOC nmr spectra, and the revised structure has been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The isomeric p-quinone itself was also prepared, and its spectral properties and bioactivity were compared with those of rhinacanthone [2].
