A novel small tapered slot antenna for passive imaging sensors

Abstract

We propose a compact planar antenna for a 94GHz-band passive mm-wave (PMMW) imaging array system. The key feature is a parabolic tapered slot antenna structure with a center cut metal line that controls its radiation pattern and reduces the sidelobe level of the H-plane. By using this structure, we reduced the antenna size by one tenth compared to conventional tapered slot antennas, whereas the actual gain of this antenna was 12.4 dBi. In addition, this antenna has a circular radiation pattern. Therefore, it is suitable for a PMMW imaging array. We also present simple CPW-to-SLOT transitions with insertion loss of 0. 5 dB between the 90 - 100GHz ranges.
