The name Leptatherum boreale (Ohwi) C. H. Chen & al. was adopted by Chen et al. (2009) for the taxon Microstegium japonicum (Miq.) Koidz. Chen et al. (2009) considered using the oldest epithet japonicum, but could not due to the existence of Leptatherum japonicum Franch. & Sav. (1876) based on different types of Pollinia japonica Miq. However, our examination of the syntypes of L. japonicum Franch. & Sav. (1876) supports the idea that it is identical with Microstegium japonicum. Therefore, the name Leptatherum japonicum Franch. & Sav. (1876) should be used for M. japonicum. M. japonicum in Japan consists of two varieties distinguished by the presence I absence of hairs on the culm nodes. Additionally, these taxa show different distribution areas. Consequently, a new name, Leptatherum japonicum Franch. & Sav. van boreale (Ohwi) Ibaragi & Yonek., for M, boreale under the genus Leptatherum is proposed.
