Abstract
The interaction of various types of radiation with matter is briefly reviewed with particular emphasis on those effects peculiar to polyatomic ceramic insulators. A comparison is made between neutron and other energetic particles on the swelling behavior of alumina (A12O3), which is the strongest candidate ceramic for fusion reactor applications. Special attention focussed on the dynamic effects of irradiation, such as radiation induced conductivity, radiation enhanced electrical degradation and dielectric loss.
