3D observation of microphase-separated structures of ABC triblock copolymers

Abstract

Microphase-separated structures of ABC-type triblock copolymers, i.e. poly(styrene-block-isoprene-block-(methyl methacrylate) (SIM) triblock copolymers, were studied. Due to their complicated three-dimensional (3D) structures, transmitted image alone do not offer even qualitative results from such ABC triblock copolymers. In the present study, transmission electron microtomography (TEMT) was utilized for direct 3D observation of the SIM copolymer morphology. In the 3D image, it was found that PI domains 'cling' to the PS domains.
