Abstract

Prospective memory is one of the human memory features which involves the activity of remembering to do something in the future. The aim of this study is to examine neural basis of prospective memory in young normal subjects by measuring regional cerebral blood flow using the positron emission tomography technique. Both functional brain images obtained by subtraction method and analysis of variance showed highly localized activations in the left and the right lateral prefrontal areas and in the anterior medial frontal areas during an event-based prospective memory task compared with a control task. We conclude that the human prefrontal cortices play a critical role for realization of delayed intention of action in appropriate external context.
